The Ivy Brain Tumor Center Announces the Expansion of the Leadership Team with Charuta Furey, MD
The Ivy Brain Tumor Center is pleased to welcome Charuta Furey, MD, to its team as Assistant Professor of Neurosurgery, Pharmacogenomics Core Leader, and Principal Investigator.
Dr. Furey earned her bachelor’s degree from Harvard College and her medical degree from Yale University School of Medicine before completing her seven-year neurological surgery residency at Barrow Neurological Institute, where she trained under Nader Sanai, MD. She subsequently completed fellowship training in neurosurgical oncology at UT MD Anderson Cancer Center before returning to the Ivy Brain Tumor Center at the Barrow Neurological Institute.
Dr. Furey’s research, supported by the Joel A. Gingras Jr. Memorial Award from the American Brain Tumor Association (ABTA), focuses on translating promising laboratory discoveries into new treatments for patients with gliomas and other aggressive brain tumors. Her work integrates first-in-human and early-phase clinical trials with genomic profiling, single-cell sequencing, and molecular analyses to better understand how tumors respond to therapy, evolve over time, and develop therapeutic resistance. As part of this research, Dr. Furey helped develop a novel liquid biopsy approach that analyzes circulating tumor DNA and other biomarkers in cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) to track how brain tumors respond and evolve during treatment. This approach has the potential to provide earlier insight into treatment response and emerging resistance without the need for repeated surgical biopsies, ultimately helping inform more precise treatment strategies for patients. Her research has also contributed to early studies that supported advancing the promising drug niraparib into the large international Phase 3 Gliofocus Study.

Dr. Charuta Furey
Dr. Furey will continue her research as leader of the Ivy Center’s Pharmacogenomics Core and Principal Investigator, where her laboratory focus on early-phase clinical trials, liquid biopsy, tumor evolution, and therapeutic resistance. Dr. Furey’s clinical practice will focus on the surgical treatment of benign and malignant brain tumors, including gliomas, brain metastases, and meningiomas.
