Barrow Neurological Institute Implements Temporary Visitor Restrictions
The care and safety of our patients, visitors, staff, and community is our top priority. In keeping with that commitment, and in light of government recommendations and the number of infectious diseases in our community—including COVID-19 and influenza—we have temporarily introduced the following visitation restrictions, effective Thursday, March 19, 2020.
- No visitors at the hospital beginning Thursday, March 19 at 7:00 AM
- Areas with a one-adult visitor exception to the restriction policy:
- Neonatal Intensive Care Unit
- Labor & Delivery
- Emergency Department/Trauma – One visitor to assist with patients
- Transplant patients (for specific circumstances)
- End of Life
- All support groups, patient education events, professional education events, recreation therapy, and community events have been cancelled for an indefinite period.
Dignity Health hospitals in Arizona are closely monitoring all developments with COVID-19 and we are prepared to identify, isolate, and treat any potential patient who seeks care at one of our facilities. We are in contact with local and state health officials as well as the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and our staff is following the latest guidance from these public health agencies.

|Free Virtual Care visits for Mild COVID-19 Symptoms|
|We’re here for you during this challenging time of increased coronavirus cases. One of the best ways to protect yourself and your loved ones is to stay at home. To encourage this social distancing as well as continue to support your health and well-being, we’re offering free virtual care visits. If you or a family member have mild COVID-19 symptoms such as low-grade fever, cough, or difficulty breathing, you can speak with a healthcare provider on your phone or device for free. Here are your options for accessing a virtual visit:|

Information about coronavirus
Coronavirus Disease 2019 (abbreviated to COVID-19) is a respiratory illness that can spread from person to person. The virus that causes COVID-19 was first identified in Wuhan, China. COVID-19 has now spread to a number of countries including the United States, where several states have reported cases. The list of these confirmed cases can be found here. While most people are at low risk of contracting the virus, it can spread through close contact with someone who is already infected. Learn more about how coronavirus is spread on the CDC website.
Help prevent the spread of the virus
Certain behavior changes can help prevent the spread of coronavirus in our communities. Many states have implemented restrictions on large gatherings, and people are encouraged to practice “social distancing” by avoiding crowds and remaining 6 feet apart from each other while in public places.
Here are a few additional actions you can take to help prevent the spread of COVID-19:
- Avoid close contact with people who are sick.
- Avoid touching your eyes, nose, and mouth with unwashed hands.
- Wash your hands often with soap and water, for at least 20 seconds. Use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer that contains at least 60 percent alcohol if soap and water are not available.
Changes at our hospitals
Some Dignity Health hospitals are changing their policies to help care for patients with coronavirus and prevent its spread. Changes may be made to visitation policies or pre-visit screenings. Some hospitals are also beginning to reschedule elective procedures and these decisions are being made on a hospital-by-hospital basis in coordination with local health departments.

What are the symptoms of coronavirus?
Patients with COVID-19 have mild to severe respiratory symptoms that can include fever, cough, and/or shortness of breath.
How do I get care
If you are experiencing symptoms of COVID-19, here are some ways you can access care. If you are experiencing a medical emergency, call 911.
- Online Symptom Checker – Chat online with an expert to check your symptoms and get a referral to a local care center.
- Virtual Urgent Care – We encourage you to consider virtual visits (via phone or video chat) instead of in-person visits, whether you have COVID-19 symptoms or not. For anyone experiencing symptoms of COVID-19, please take advantage of our video visit offerings before being seen in person. Some of our doctors at Dignity Health offer virtual visits as an alternative to in-person visits — please ask your doctor or medical group office when you call in.
- Call your primary care physician – Before going to the hospital, contact your primary care physician for guidance. They may be able to direct you to a local testing site and help you avoid waiting in the Emergency Room.
- Schedule an emergency care visit – If you do need immediate care, consider scheduling a visit online with one of our urgent care or emergency rooms before you arrive. Select your estimated hospital arrival time online and wait at home until it’s time to be seen. If you are experiencing symptoms of COVID-19, please call the Emergency Room before you arrive.
What should I do if I am experiencing symptoms of coronavirus?
If you believe you have symptoms of COVID-19, follow the steps below to help prevent the disease from spreading to people in your home or community:
- Stay home, except to get medical care. Restrict activities outside your home, avoid visiting public places, and do not take public transportation, ride shares, or taxis.
- Contact your healthcare provider if your illness is worsening. Reach out to your healthcare provider by calling ahead before visiting the office. Tell your provider that you have or may have coronavirus-like symptoms so they can take steps to keep other people from getting infected. If you have a medical emergency and need to call 911, notify the dispatch personnel that you have been, or are being, evaluated for COVID-19. If possible, put on a face mask before emergency medical services arrive.
- Wear a face mask. Wearing a face mask when you are around other people can help prevent the spread of the virus in your community.
Testing for coronavirus
Our health care providers are working with local health officials on coronavirus testing. Right now, only people experiencing symptoms are recommended for testing. In most cases, testing is offered at no cost.
Some of our divisions are offering drive-thru testing services, or outpatient clinics for testing. Check with your health care provider for details.
