Matthew A. Smith-Cohn, DO, is a board-certified neurologist and neuro-oncologist and an assistant professor at Barrow Neurological Institute. Dr. Smith-Cohn’s expertise is in the management of brain and spine tumors as well as neurological complications of cancer.
During medical school, he completed a research fellowship in brain cancer immunology at the University of Pittsburgh Hillman Cancer Center. Dr. Smith-Cohn subsequently earned his medical degree from the Lake Erie College of Osteopathic Medicine in Erie, Pennsylvania. Afterward, he completed his adult neurology residency at the University of Utah School of Medicine in Salt Lake City. Subsequently, he completed a joint clinical and research fellowship in neuro-oncology at Johns Hopkins University and the National Institutes of Health (NIH) in Maryland.
Dr. Smith-Cohn is an experienced clinical investigator for trials focusing on brain cancer. Dr. Smith-Cohn’s career path was guided by his experience with a family member with glioblastoma. His personal experience provides perspective in his care of patients and their families. He believes in a patient-centered and team-based approach for brain and spine tumor patients. His research interests include translational medicine, pharmacokinetics across the blood-brain barrier, precision medicine, cancer immunology, health care delivery, and patient survivorship. One of his goals is to contribute to the development of better treatments for brain and spine tumor patients.
